The primary determinants of chronic diseases are multifactorial and influenced by various social, economic, and lifestyle factors. Understanding and addressing these determinants are critical in both federal and provincial contexts to effectively combat chronic diseases. In Canada, as per federal evidence, key determinants include socioeconomic status, access to healthcare, education, and lifestyle choices. These determinants have a substantial impact on the prevalence of chronic diseases, particularly among populations with lower socioeconomic status (Renzi et al., 2019). Socioeconomic status can affect access to nutritious food, healthcare services, and educational resources, creating disparities in the risk of developing chronic diseases.

In Alberta, provincial evidence underscores the importance of factors such as diet, physical activity, and access to healthcare services in influencing the incidence and management of chronic diseases. The diversity of Alberta's population, which encompasses both urban and rural communities, adds another layer of complexity to the understanding of determinants. Urban areas may offer greater access to healthcare and recreational facilities, while rural regions may face challenges related to healthcare infrastructure and the availability of fresh and nutritious food. These variations in determinants can contribute to differences in chronic disease rates across the province, highlighting the need for tailored interventions that consider the unique characteristics of different communities within Alberta.

Efforts to address chronic diseases must take these determinants into account and develop strategies that address the specific needs and challenges of diverse populations, ultimately working towards reducing the burden of chronic diseases and improving the overall health and well-being of the people in Alberta (Renzi et al., 2019). Comprehensive approaches that encompass public health, healthcare services, and community engagement are essential to tackle the multifaceted determinants of chronic diseases effectively.
