Understanding the social determinants of health among Indigenous Canadians (Kolahdooz et al., 2015)

This study aims to explore strategies for mitigating educational obstacles in distinct educational environments, enhancing health literacy through various ways, and sustaining the enduring impact of health education by employing culturally specific methods. The four social determinants of health (SDH) discussed pertain primarily to Indigenous populations in Canada. However, it is worth noting that certain SDH identified in this study may also impact segments of the broader Canadian community. To address the persistent health disparities experienced by Indigenous populations, it is imperative to comprehend the contextual factors that influence health outcomes. This entails recognising the broader systemic contexts in which these populations exist, as well as understanding how individuals navigate and respond to these situations (Jin et al., 2014). Research suggests that it is advisable to explore strategies for managing unresolved historical trauma or intergenerational trauma to enhance the overall health and well-being of those who have experienced such trauma.

This systematic review is subject to several limitations, such as its exclusive inclusion of research published in the English language and its exclusive focus on the four primary social determinants of health as recognised by the Community Well-Being Index of Canada. Additional investigation is required to effectively tackle the intricacies surrounding the social determinants of health (SDH) within Indigenous communities.
